What Is a Psychiatric Evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation is the first step in getting treatment for anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD, bipolar disorder and other mental health conditions. It is a full assessment of your symptoms, history and goals, done by a provider who can diagnose, treat and prescribe.
Your evaluation is with Olga Vizcaino, PMHNP-BC. She asks what you are experiencing, how long it has been happening and how it affects your work, sleep and relationships. Then she explains what she finds and what your options are. There is no test to pass and no physical exam.
You do not need to know your diagnosis before you come, and you do not need to be sure you want medication. Our office is in Miami Lakes, close to Hialeah, Miami Gardens, Doral, Miramar and Pembroke Pines. Adults from across Miami-Dade and Broward can book in person, or by video from anywhere in Florida.
What Happens at Your Psychiatric Evaluation
1. Why you came in
You explain what brought you in and when it started. You can begin anywhere. The provider asks follow up questions as you go.
2. Your symptoms
The provider asks about mood, worry, sleep, appetite, energy, focus and behavior, and how each one affects your work, home life and relationships.
3. Your history
Past mental health care, medications you have tried and how they worked, medical conditions, family history and substance use. This shows patterns and helps rule out other causes.
4. Your life right now
Work, relationships, stress, routine and support at home. Your daily life shapes which treatments will actually fit you.
5. Possible medical causes
Some conditions, such as thyroid problems, and some medications can cause symptoms that look like a mental health condition. These are checked as part of your history. Recent lab results or notes from your primary care provider help.
6. Findings and options
You hear what the provider found, which diagnosis fits if any, and what your treatment options are. You can ask questions and take time to decide.
Signs You Should Book a Psychiatric Evaluation in Miami Lakes
- Constant worry that is hard to control
- Panic attacks, or fear of having another one
- Low mood, loss of interest or feeling empty for weeks
- Trouble focusing or finishing tasks as an adult
- Mood swings, or periods of unusual energy and little sleep
- Flashbacks, nightmares or being on edge after a stressful event
- Intrusive thoughts or habits you feel you must repeat
- Sleep problems that do not improve
- Medication from another provider that is not working as expected
- A past diagnosis you want a second opinion on
- A referral from your primary care provider
- Symptoms you cannot explain
What You Walk Out With
Most people leave with four things. First, a clear explanation of what the provider found and why, in plain terms, so you understand what your symptoms mean. Second, a named diagnosis if one applies. If your symptoms do not fit one, you hear that clearly and know what to watch for.
Third, treatment options: medication, follow up care or both, with the benefits and trade offs of each. You choose what to start, and you can choose to start nothing. Medication is one possible option, not a required outcome. If you decide to start, ongoing care continues through psychiatric medication management.
Fourth, a plan for your next visit and for how often you are seen after that, so you leave knowing what happens next.

Your Treatment Options at Mental Health First in Miami Lakes
Start treatment
You begin the plan you chose with the provider and schedule a follow up visit. If you start medication, ongoing visits track how it is working.
Keep monitoring
If your symptoms are mild or unclear, you may return in a few weeks to see how they change before deciding on treatment.
Coordinate care
If you also see a therapist or a primary care provider, the plan can be shared with them with your permission so everyone works from the same picture.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
ID and insurance
Photo ID and your insurance card, so the visit can be checked in and billed correctly.
Medications
A list of current medications and supplements, with doses if you know them. A photo of the bottles works.
Past care
Names of past providers and any past diagnoses, so the provider can build on earlier care instead of starting over.
Records
Recent lab results or medical records, if you have them. Thyroid and blood work can matter.
Your notes
A short note on your main symptoms and when they began.
Your questions
Anything you want answered. If you forget something, the provider can still begin and records can be added later.
Conditions Our Miami Lakes Psychiatric Evaluation Can Diagnose
Ongoing worry, muscle tension and poor sleep that continue most days and are hard to switch off. The evaluation looks at how long it has lasted and how much it affects your life.
Sudden attacks of intense fear with a pounding heart or shortness of breath, often followed by worry about the next one.
Low mood, loss of interest and low energy that last for weeks. The evaluation checks how severe it is and whether another condition or a medical cause is involved.
Trouble with focus, planning, time and follow through that began in childhood and continues in adult life.
Flashbacks, nightmares, being on edge and avoiding reminders after a traumatic event.
Unwanted thoughts and repeated behaviors or mental rituals that take up time and cause distress.
Shifts between high energy and low mood that go beyond normal ups and downs. The evaluation maps the pattern over time.
Changes in thinking, perception or motivation that affect daily functioning.
Longer lasting changes in mood that do not fit a single clear label.
Intense fear of a particular object or situation that leads you to avoid it.

Done by a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner. It is an interview and history that ends in a diagnosis and treatment options. The provider can prescribe medication if you choose it.
Done by a psychologist. It often includes standardized tests of thinking, learning or personality and ends with a written report. Psychologists usually do not prescribe medication.
A shorter visit that screens for common symptoms. Primary care providers can prescribe for many conditions and often refer to a psychiatric provider when symptoms need a full evaluation.
